A Somatic Approach to Therapy

About

Meet Sarah

Hi, there.  Welcome to Sarah Bibbo Therapy.  I am a Psychotherapist (ASW), Somatic Experiencing Trainee (SEP) and a Certified Trauma Sensitive Yoga Instructor through the JRI Trauma Center in Boston (Bessel van der Kolk).

I have trained with both children/adolescents at UCLA's Child/Adolescent Anxiety, OCD and Tic Disorder Clinic and adults at the UCLA RNH Intensive Partial Hospitalization program.

I combine Evidence Based Practices (EBP) with somatic therapy for optimal internal awareness and change.

Specialties

I specialize in therapy for Anxiety, OCD, Chronic Pain and Complex Trauma.  I help support developmental growth by working through emotional challenges, and transforming psychosomatic, or mind-body, conditions.

Having overcome a chronic condition myself, I understand the complexities of psychosomatic conditions and dealing with our current, limited, medical system.  I am a member of the International Pelvic Pain Society and Dr. Lonnie Zeltzer's (UCLA) Creative Healing for Youth in Pain (CHYP).

I have a background in theatre and design, having spent several years working creatively in NY and LA and believe having a creative practice can help some individuals feel grounded.  I incorporate a variety of nueroaestetic therapies into my practice including Linklater voice work.

Why Somatic Therapy?

Somatic Therapy has been shown to be one of the most effective treatments in managing both large and small trauma.  When we experience a difficult event, or series of events we experience it both mentally and physically in our bodies.  It makes sense to treat trauma both through talk therapy and somatic interventions that specifically deal with internal body awareness.

What is Nueroaestetics?

Nueroaestetics in an emerging field and term coined by Semir Zeki at the University College of London, with recent development from the International Arts + Mind Lab at John Hopkins University.  The field aims to examine the neuroscience of the creative arts and how art effects our physiology, altering our mood, energy and even serotonin levels.

As a huge lover of the arts, I innately understood the therapeutic effects of drawing, dancing and playing since childhood.  I've never understood why these practices get erased when reaching adolescents and adulthood.  I've dreamt of a time when doctors, instead of a pill, would prescribe dance lessons, theater tickets or an improv class. Nueroaestetics brings us closer.
